Description

The Retail Commodity Survey collects detailed information about retail commodity sales in Canada to produce estimates of the distribution of the sales of various commodities at the national level, for different types of retail outlets in Canada.

This annual survey was discontinued after the 1989 reference period and re-activated in 1997 as a quarterly survey.

Data sources and methodology

Sampling

This is a sample survey with a cross-sectional design.

The target population for this survey consists of all retail locations on the Statistics Canada business register. All respondents were mailed out an introductory letter and were followed up by telephone and personal interview.
