This survey collects information from a sample of kindergarten children living in selected communities. This survey is part of a federal and provincial initiative to better understand children's development during the early years and children's readiness to learn when entering school. The goal via this initiative is to help communities to improve outcomes for the children and families living within them, by providing the necessary information to develop and refine local strategies for healthy child development.

Data release - June 11, 2001 (These data are for the community component of the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth for the communities of Coquitlam/Fraser North, Prince Albert, Winnipeg, Prince Edward Island and southwestern Newfoundland.)

Description

The National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth: Community Component collects information from a sample of kindergarten children living in selected communities. This survey is part of a federal and provincial initiative to better understand children's development during the early years and children's readiness to learn when entering school. The goal via this initiative is to help communities to improve outcomes for the children and families living within them, by providing the necessary information to develop and refine local strategies for healthy child development. No public microdata file will be produced.

There is substantial evidence which supports the importance of investing in the early years of a child's development. Research has demonstrated that these formative years are critical, and that the type of environment in which children spend their early years, including support mechanisms in the child's community, can have a major impact on the rest of their lives.

Data sources and methodology

Target population

The target population for each community is all children enrolled in senior kindergarten in the fall and are still attending a school within the community in the winter of the school year.

Sampling

This is a sample survey with a cross-sectional design.

Statistics Canada is prohibited by law from releasing any information it collects which could identify any person, business, or organization, unless consent has been given by the respondent or as permitted by the Statistics Act. Various confidentiality rules are applied to all data that are released or published to prevent the publication or disclosure of any information deemed confidential. If necessary, data are suppressed to prevent direct or residual disclosure of identifiable data.

No public use microdata file will be produced by Statistics Canada and data will not be made available through the Data Liberation Initiative (DLI).
