Reference period of change - 2018

Beginning with reference year 2018, the survey estimates have been produced with a pseudo-census approach. The main objective of the methodological change was to further reduce response burden while gaining further efficiencies within the Integrated Business Statistics Program (IBSP).

Reference period of change - 2017

Target population - Beginning with reference year 2017, the data are classified by industry based on North American Industry Classification System (NAICS 2017, version 2.0), with this NAICS revision, In recognition of changes in rental industries and the small or diminishing size of some rental industries, 532220 Formal wear and costume rental, 532230 Video tape and disc rental and 532290 Other consumer goods rental were merged into 532280 Other consumer goods rental.

Reference period of change - 2014

Reference years 2012 and 2013 have been revised to reflect the important improvements Statistics Canada made to its methods and processes used to compile its annual economic statistics.

Reference period of change - 2013

Statistics Canada launched the Integrated Business Statistics Program (IBSP) to provide a more efficient model for producing economic statistics. The main objective was to enhance the economic statistics program so that it remains as robust and flexible as possible while reducing the burden on business respondents. The program changes ensure that Statistics Canada will continue to produce a consistent and coherent set of economic statistics. As well, data users and researchers can more easily combine economic data with information from other sources to undertake their analyses. These changes took effect when data for the reference year 2013 were released.

Target population - As of reference year 2007, the classification of this industry is based on the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) 2007.

Reference period of change - 2005

Instrument design - In 2005, in order to reduce respondent burden, smaller firms receive a characteristics questionnaire (shortened version), comprised of industry-specific modules only. Data for the financial modules are extracted from administrative files. Firms which operate in more than one industry or province will receive a full questionnaire which includes: financial modules (revenues and expenses), as well as an industry-specific module.

As of the 2004 reference year, this survey became part of the Unified Enterprise Surveys (UES) Programme.

Target population - As of reference year 2002, the classification of this industry is based on the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) 2002.

Reference period of change - 1998

From 1982 to 1996 this survey was based on Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) and 1997 onwards was based on the North American Industry Classisfication System (NAICS).
