Reference period of change - 2016

Target population - The top-up sample for 2016 only included Regular Forces Veterans, that is, reservists were removed from the cross-sectional population.

As well, those that were entry rank at release (both Regular Forces and Reserve) or not having at least 3.5 years of B service for the Reserve Class A/B were not included in the longitudinal and cross-sectional populations of the 2016 LASS.

Changes to the population studied will affect comparison between years of the survey. Please refer to Appendix D of the User Guide for instructions on how to correctly compare estimates between the LASS 2013 and LASS 2016.

Instrument design - The following blocks are not new but have been updated since LASS 2013:
1. General Health
2. Activities of Daily Living
3. Alcohol Use
4. Contacts with Health Professionals
5. Health Care Utilization
6. Labour Force
7. Employment History
8. Income

The following blocks are new and were not administered in LASS 2013:
1. Deployment Experience
2. Activities of Daily Living follow-up
3. Social Provisions follow-up
4. Consultations about Mental Health

Sampling - In 2013, LASS also selected sample from the two additional strata. These were Reserve Class A/B and Reserve Class C. The Reserve Forces were excluded from the cross sectional target population in 2016. For the longitudinal sample the Reserve Forces were collapsed into one stratum.

The first cycle of the Life After Service Survey is conducted.

The Survey on Transition to Civilian Life was conducted by Statistics Canada on behalf of Veterans Affairs Canada and the Department of National Defence.
