Canadian Tobacco Use Monitoring Survey (CTUMS)
Summary of changes
Activity on this program started: 1999
Reference period of change - 2017
Until 2017, Statistics Canada conducted the Canadian Tobacco, Alcohol and Drugs Survey (CTADS). It has been determined by Health Canada that this survey will now be separated into two independent surveys. These two surveys have been conducted for the first time in 2019, starting with the Canadian Alcohol and Drugs Survey (CADS (record number : 5289), followed by the Canadian Tobacco and Nicotine Survey (CTNS; record number 5305).
Instrument design - The following modules were added to the 2017 questionnaire: Household Vaping (HV), Cessation Methods (CM), Other Cessation Methods (OM), Health Professionals (HP), Perception of Harm (POH), Other drugs and substances (ODS), Aboriginal and Education Highest Degree.
Some questions were added or modified in the following existing modules: Electronic Cigarette (ELC), Tobacco Products (TP), Exposure to second-hand smoke, and Cannabis (CAN) modules. Questions in the Purchasing Patterns (PP) module were reordered.
Reference period of change - 2015
The Canadian Tobacco, Alcohol and Drug Survey (CTADS)of 2015 used, for the first time in 2015, the new survey frame for household surveys. The advantage of this new frame is the inclusion of cellular phones numbers in the frame.
Collection instrument - The Menthol(MNTH) module was added to the 2015 questionnaire. Several new questions were added to the existing Electronic Cigarette (ELC), Pain Relievers (PR) and Cannabis (CAN) modules.
Some questions were removed from the Purchasing Patterns (PP) module.
The bootstrap weights accompanying previous cycles of CTADS were based on 250 mean bootstrap replicates, which requires the use of Fay's adjustment in certain software packages. In 2015, CTADS employs the regular (or standard) bootstrap with 500 replicates, which is easier to use and does not require Fay's adjustment.
Reference period of change - February to December 2013
Beginning in 2013, the Canadian Tobacco, Alcohol and Drugs Survey (CTADS) replaces the Canadian Tobacco Use Monitoring Survey (CTUMS). The CTADS is collected every two years and asks survey participants tobacco-related questions from the CTUMS as well as additional content covering alcohol and prescription and non-prescription drug-use.
Reference period of change - February to December 2011
As of 2011, data release is in annual format only.
Collection instrument - The module CC, Cheaper Cigarettes, was removed from the 2011 questionnaire. In its place, the module PP, Purchasing Patterns, was added.
Five new questions were added to the TP module, Tobacco Products.

Reference period of change - February to June 2010 (Cycle 1)
As a special project, Yukon data were collected in 2010, however, for continuity, the data are not included in the public use microdata file.
Collection instrument - Cycle 1 of 2010 used the same questionnaire as Cycle 2 2009 but with some minor changes.
Reference period of change - July to December 2009 (Cycle 2)
Collection instrument - Cycle 2 of 2009 used the same questionnaire as Cycle 1 2009 but with some minor changes.
Reference period of change - February to June 2009 (Cycle 1)
Collection instrument - Cycle 1 of 2009 used the same questionnaire as Cycle 2, 2008 but with some minor changes. For a summary of the changes please see Section 6.1 of the User Guide.

Reference period of change - February to June 2008 (Cycle 1)
Collection instrument - Cycle 1 of 2008 used the same questionnaire as Cycle 2 2007 but excluded some questions asking if the respondent smoked light or mild cigarettes and the potential reasons for smoking them.

The new questions refer to rolling or making your own cigarettes, opinions on who is responsible for young people starting to smoke, as well as smoking cessation programs offered at your workplace.
Reference period of change - July to December 2006 (Cycle 2)
On March 9, 2009, a file combining microdata for 2005 and 2006 became available. This file provides a larger dataset for researchers to examine sub-groups of the population. The data have been re-weighted to reflect this two year period. Users should note that variables not common to both years were dropped from the combined file.
Reference period of change - February to June 2006 (Cycle 1)
The household file was adjusted (calibrated) to provincial and monthly estimates because the stratum estimates were no longer available. The weighted estimates on the household secondhand smoke exposure tables for children, by province and age group, were verified for Cycle 1 2006 and compared to the original estimates adjusted to the stratum. The difference between the exposure tables was found to be less than 1% for all those reporting "yes" or "no" to the relevant questions.
Collection instrument - The questionnaire used for the Canadian Tobacco Use Monitoring Survey during Cycle 1 of 2006 contains several questions that were not asked in Cycle 2 of 2005. The new questions refer to the use of tobacco products like herbal cigarettes and water pipes as well as purchasing cigarettes for minors.
