Summary of changes

Activity on this program started: January 1980

Reference period of change - May 2023

Target population - The target population was based on statistical locations instead of statistical establishments.

Reference period of change - March 2022

With the release of the March 2022 preliminary estimates, unadjusted monthly data were revised back to January 2020. Factors influencing revisions include late receipt of respondent information, corrections to the information provided, the replacement of imputed data with reported data (once available), introducing new births, utilizing the most recent administrative data, the re-classification of companies within, into and out of the food services and drinking places subsector, and updates to seasonal factors.

Reference period of change - August 2020

Collection is now made on only a few selected food chains while sales for the other units of the population are retrieved from the Goods and Services Tax (GST) administrative file received from the Canada Revenue Agency. GST data has also been used retroactively to replace the estimates of reference period January 2016 and after. To avoid a break in the level of the series a linking exercise was done to revise estimates before January 2016. Consequently, both unadjusted and seasonally adjusted monthly data were revised back to January 1998.
