Travel Survey of Residents of Canada (TSRC)

Summary of changes

Activity on this program started: 1979

Reference period of change - first quarter 2013

Previously, about 10% of interviews were conducted via a computer-assisted personal interview (CAPI). Interviews are now conducted solely by computer-assisted telephone interviews (CATI).

Reference period of change - first quarter 2009

Sampling - In 2009 the TSRC had a sample cut of 1 rotation in every province on the LFS. This translated into a reduction of almost half the sample.

Reference period of change - first quarter 2005

In 2001, Statistics Canada and the other sponsors of the Canadian Travel Survey reached the conclusion that the survey needed to be redesigned. Since the beginning of 2005, the Travel Survey of Residents of Canada (TSRC) has been conducted to measure domestic travel in Canada. It replaces the Canadian Travel Survey. Featuring several definitional changes and a new questionnaire, this survey provides estimates of domestic travel that are more in line with the international guidelines recommended by the WTO and the United Nations Statistical Commission.

Target population - In the Canadian Travel Survey, the target population consisted of Canadian residents who were 15 years of age and older. Since many of these youth were not able to respond effectively to the survey, the minimum age was raised to 18 years of age and older in TSRC.

Reference period of change - fourth quarter 2004

This was the last release of domestic travel estimates based on the Canadian Travel Survey (CTS).

Reference period of change - fourth quarter 2001

At the start of 2002, a more systematic interviewer monitoring system was implemented in the regional offices. This is an automated system that enables supervisors to see the interviewer's screen remotely and hear the telephone conversation between the interviewer and the respondent. Increased monitoring of interviewers served to improve the collection of information from respondents and thereby enhance the quality of the data produced by the survey.

Reference period of change - third quarter 2000

Data sources - In the summer of 2000, the CTS and LFS data collection method was changed. Rather than being done by interviewers working out of their homes (a de-centralized environment), the majority of the collection was going to be done in all regional offices (centralized environment).

Reference period of change - second quarter 2000

For changes that occurred prior to November 2000, please refer to the document entitled History of the Canadian Travel Survey available in the "Documentation" section located at the end of the detailed information for this survey (for the fourth quarter 2004 or any previous reference period).
