Sawmills

Summary of changes

Activity on this program started: January 1946

Reference period of change - January 2019

Sampling - All establishments above the thresholds are now selected in the sample as a sample selection of establishments above the thresholds was previously done.

Establishments above the thresholds used to be divided in two strata (one "take-all" and one "take-some"), they are now all put in one "take-all" stratum.

The sample size increase is caused by the change in the sampling design.

Reference period of change - January 2012

In January 2012, a number of changes were made to the sampling and estimation methods for the Monthly Sawmills Survey. As a result, CANSIM table 303-0009 was terminated and data from 2012 onwards, are available in CANSIM tables 303-0064 and 303-0065. Statistically modelled data from January 2003 to December 2012 are also available in CANSIM tables 303-0064.

Target population - As of January 2012, the target population for this survey includes all sawmills in Canada classified to the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS), 321111. Prior to January 2012, sawmills in Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island were excluded from the target population.

Reference period of change - September 2006

The survey name was changed to Sawmills.

Reference period of change - January 2004

Collection instrument - Effective the January 2004 reference period, the questionnaire was changed to allow respondants to report production and stocks on hand in either metric (cubic metres) or imperial measure (1000's of board feet).

Reference period of change - September 2000

Prior to reference year 1996, this survey was named Production, Shipments and Stocks on Hand of Sawmills East of the Rockies and the population was all sawmills in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Québec, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

In 1996, a similar survey (record number 2135) which was held in British Columbia was amalgamated to this survey and the survey population was amended accordingly.
