Survey of Service Industries: Performing Arts (PART)

Summary of changes

Activity on this program started: 1967

Reference period of change - 2014

In 2013, Statistics Canada launched the Integrated Business Statistics Program (IBSP) to provide a more efficient model for producing economic statistics. The main objective was to enhance the economic statistics program so that it remains as robust and flexible as possible while reducing the burden on business respondents. The program changes ensure that Statistics Canada will continue to produce a consistent and coherent set of economic statistics. As well, data users and researchers can more easily combine economic data with information from other sources to undertake their analyses. These changes took effect when data for the reference year 2014 were released.

Target population - Beginning with reference year 2014, the data are classified by industry based on North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) 2012.

Reference period of change - 2012

This survey was not conducted for the 2011 reference year. Its frequency was changed from annual to biennial as of the 2012 reference year.

Effective with the release of reference year 2012, the data for Performing arts survey from 2009 to 2010 have been revised.

Reference period of change - 2007

Target population - As of reference year 2007, the industry classification is based on the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) 2007.

Reference period of change - 2006

Starting with reference year 2006, this survey became an industry-based sample survey entitled "Annual Survey of Service Industries: Performing Arts". It is now conducted by Service Industries Division, as part of the Unified Enterprise Surveys programme.

Reference period of change - 2005

For 2005, a shorter questionnaire, designed only to collect core financial data (revenues and expenses), was used for this industry. The questionnaire was only sent to a subset of businesses with complex operational structures. Data for the remaining businesses selected in sample were compiled using administrative data.

Reference period of change - 2004

Commencing with reference year 2004, this new survey, which now comprises both the for-profit and not-for-profit establishments, is administered by the Service Industries Program, in collaboration with the Culture Statistics Program.

Target population - As of 2004, the target population consists of all statistical establishments classified as performing arts establishments according to the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS 2002) during the reference year.

Instrument design - In 2004, the questionnaire was redesigned to achieve a number of objectives:

- reduce overall response burden;
- produce more relevant industry information;
- become more compatible with business accounting practices and make the questionnaire easier to complete;
- reduce our collection and processing costs;
- produce statistics that are more comparable with those of other industries and other countries.

Reference period of change - 1998/99

Data sources - All companies were surveyed directly during the initial years of the survey (1973-78). From 1979 to 1983, for companies receiving grants from the Canada Council, the Council forwarded a photocopy of the end of season report to Statistics Canada where the information was transcribed to the Statistics Canada questionnaire. Other companies were directly surveyed. It should be noted that while the survey was first administered in 1973, historical data concerning performing arts companies who received grants between 1967 and 1972 were also available. The data were derived from Canada Council records (end of season reports, financial statements).
