Reference period of change - 2022
Each survey cycle, the CHS content is reviewed and updated to reflect the changing data needs of stakeholders. As a result, new thematic content modules are introduced, and others are removed.
For the 2022 survey, the following content has been added:
- support and childcare payments
- household's access to transportation
The following content has been removed:
- impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on dwelling and neighbourhood satisfaction, loss of housing and economic hardships of households
- various dimensions of physical and mental wellbeing, and how they impact everyday living of Canadians
For reference year 2022, CHS collection included all 10 provinces, data was collected from October 31, 2022 until March 31, 2023. This cycle, the 2022 CHS will not be performing collection in the 3 territories. Instead, key housing indicators in the 3 territories will be collected through the 2022 Northern Canada Social Survey (NCSS).

For the 2021 survey, the following content has been added:
- previous experience in subsidized housing
- forced moves (including eviction) and reasons for them
- various dimensions of physical and mental wellbeing, and how they impact everyday living of Canadians
- immigration and citizenship status
- impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on dwelling and neighbourhood satisfaction, loss of housing and economic hardships of households
The following content has been removed:
- lease arrangements
- neighbourhood services
- intentions to move
- volunteering
- dwelling accessibility adaptation
Sampling and collection
For reference year 2021, CHS collection included all 10 provinces and the three territorial capitals (Whitehorse, Yellowknife and Iqaluit).
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, collection via Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) was not possible and data in the three territorial capitals were collected instead using self-response Electronic Questionnaire (rEQ) and Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing (CATI) follow-up.
For reference year 2021, data were collected from beginning of January until June 2, 2021 in all 10 provinces and from the beginning of January until the end of March 2021 in the three territorial capitals. In reference period year 2018, data were collected from the beginning of November 2018 until the end of March 2019.
