Data on GDP for the first quarter of 2019 have been released along with revised data from the first quarter of 2018. These data incorporate new and revised data, as well as updated data on seasonal trends.

Reference period of change - fourth quarter 2018

With this release on labour productivity and related measures, data were revised back to the first quarter of 1997 at the aggregate and industry levels. These revisions are consistent with those incorporated in the annual benchmarks on provincial and territorial labour productivity and related measures, published on February 22, 2019. As well, indexes of all series were subject to historical revision going back to1981, as a result of revisions to the values for the 2012 reference year. However, the resulting growth rate revisions were negligible.

Due to the shutdown for some US federal agencies providing source data, the publication of preliminary data on American productivity and related measures for fourth quarter and annual average 2018 did not occur as scheduled on February 6, 2019. Therefore, for the purpose of comparison, American data for this reference period will not be mentioned in this release.

Reference period of change - third quarter 2018

With this release on labour productivity and related measures, data were revised back to the first quarter of 2013 at the aggregate and industry levels. Finally, the indexes of labour productivity and the related measures have been converted from reference year 2007 to reference year 2012. That change affects the data for the period from the first quarter of 1981 to the present. Adoption of the new 2012 reference year does not alter the growth rates of productivity and the related measures since it represents a scaling of indices based on 2007.

The Canadian System of macroeconomic accounts is implementing a new revision policy. Revisions to annual estimates of productivity, which affect the three most recent calendar years, will take place in December rather than June, as was previously the practice. In addition, comprehensive revisions (for which the time series is open beyond three years) will occur on a more frequent basis. The next annual and comprehensive revisions are planned for December 2014. For more information see Latest Developments in the Canadian Economic Accounts (13-605-X). Aggregate level business sector productivity and related variable data were revised back to the first quarter of 2008 in order to bring these data into line with the revised data by industry.

While revisions to the aggregate business sector estimates were minimal, revisions to the industry detail were more substantial in nature.

The historical revision of the Canadian System of National Accounts incorporated the new international 2008 System of National Accounts accounting standard, methodological improvements and statistical revisions as well as a new industry classification, which provides more detail for the service sector.

Important changes are coming to Canada's System of National Accounts (CSNA), starting in October. These changes will affect all users of CSNA products and statistics such as gross domestic product (GDP), balance of payments, international investment, and input-output tables. For more information, consult the National Economic Accounts website. Because of the 2012 CSNA historical revision, the publication of the first quarter 2012 data includes revisions extending back only one year at the aggregate level.
