Most serious offence refers to the most serious offence associated with the admission to correctional services. The most serious offence type is selected according to an offence seriousness scale, based on actual sentences handed down by courts in Canada. Offence types are categorized from most to least serious, as follows: violent, drug related, property, other Criminal Code, Youth Criminal Justice Act, other federal offences, and provincial/municipal offences.

Person refers to an individual and is the unit of analysis for most social statistics programs.
