Relative cancer survival rate refers to the ratio of the observed survival for a group of individuals diagnosed with cancer to the survival that would have been expected for members of the general population who have the same main factors affecting survival (sex, age, place of residence) as those with cancer.

Population refers to the total membership, based on specific characteristics, of a group of people, objects or events at a given time and within a particular geographic area.
