Cancer incidence of population, rate

Cancer incidence refers to the number of new cases of primary malignant neoplasms in a population over a given period of time, usually one year. The rate is given by dividing that number of cases by the size of the population. Rates for breast cancer are calculated for the female population only. Rates for prostate cancer are calculated for the male population only.

Population refers to the total membership, based on specific characteristics, of a group of people, objects or events at a given time and within a particular geographic area.

The data for this variable are reported using the following measurements:

  • Age-standardized rate per 100,000 population
  • Rate per 100,000 population
