Mental Health and Access to Care Survey (MHACS)

Alcohol or drug use disorder of person, status

Alcohol or drug use disorder refers to whether or not, in some specified period of time, the person classified as meeting the criteria for any of the substance use disorders measured, specifically: alcohol abuse or dependence, cannabis use or dependence, or other drug use or dependence. Whether or not the person met the criteria was determined by a modified World Health Organization Composite International Diagnostic Interview (WHO-CIDI). Mental conditions or problems were identified through a set of questions pertaining to the feelings, the symptoms, severity, the intensity and the impact relative to each of the disorders listed.

Person refers to an individual and is the unit of analysis for most social statistics programs.
