Integrated Criminal Court Survey (ICCS)

Length of custody of case, category

Length of custody refers to the specified amount of time a person is sentenced to a secure facility or a prison. Custodial sentence lengths are intended to reflect the amount of time remaining to be served on a custodial sentence after credit has been awarded for time spent in pre-sentence custody. However, in some jurisdictions, the length of custody information represents the total length of custody imposed by court. Certain jurisdictions report a greater proportion of 'unknown' for length of custody.

Case refers to one or more charges against an accused person or company, which were processed by the courts at the same time (date of offence, date of initiation, date of first appearance, date of decision/sentencing), and received a final decision.
