Main source water type of drinking water plant, category

Main source water type refers to whether the water treated by a drinking water plant is primarily surface water, such as water from rivers, lakes and reservoirs; or is primarily groundwater, such as water from underground aquifers accessed through wells and springs.

Drinking water plant refers to water treatment plants that are licensed and regulated by provincial/territorial agencies (excluding First Nations communities) and that draw and process source/raw water from the environment to produce treated/potable water for consumption, serving 300 or more people.

The data for this variable are reported using the following classifications and/or lists:
