Aboriginal Peoples Survey (APS)

Household food security of person, category

Household food security refers to the level of food security in a person's household, which may or may not be the level felt by the person.

In the context of the 2017 Aboriginal Peoples Survey, 'household food security' refers to the interpretation of responses given to a set of six questions and indicates whether food security was high or marginal, low, or very low. Questions related to food security referred to the previous 12 months and focused on all members of the household and not just the main respondent to the survey. Answers were rated for each of the following criteria: could their food last long enough; would it provide balanced meals; would the quantity be adequate; would they eat less than they should; was there frequent issues with food; would they be hungry.

Person refers to an individual and is the unit of analysis for most social statistics programs.
