Coastal and ocean floor ecosystems comprise all areas between the exclusive economic zone outer boundary and coastline, as well as adjacent coastal ecosystems that are influenced by marine waters. These transitional coastal ecosystem areas are only included where data is available.

Coastal and oceanic geographic area refers to areas whose boundaries are specifically delimited in accordance with well-defined concepts and which, in total, cover the entire ocean area within the outer boundary of the exclusive economic zone of Canada, as well as adjacent coastal ecosystems that are influenced by marine waters.
