Geographical retention of immigrant, rate

Geographical retention refers to the proportion of immigrant taxfilers maintaining their residence in their intended geographical area of destination, it can be an economic region, a province or a territory. The numerator is the number of taxfilers who, at the time of filing taxes, were still residing in their intended area of destination. The denominator is the number of taxfilers who had this geographic area as their intended economic region of destination. Immigrants moving outside the economic region may still reside in the province of intended destination. Immigrants who move outside of Canada are excluded.

Immigrant refers to a person who is, or who has ever been, a landed immigrant or permanent resident. Such a person has been granted the right to live in Canada permanently by immigration authorities. Immigrants who have obtained Canadian citizenship by naturalization are included in this group.
